Origin note
Bao/暴 is treated as a state or fief-name surname, not as the modern adjective violent. The main source-backed layer says a figure remembered as Xin or Bao Xin Gong was connected with Bao as a fief or state, and descendants used Bao after the state or locality name. Later sources also note that because the graph meaning is unfavorable, some descendants changed to Xin. The page keeps that later surname-change note separate from the older Bao-state account.
