边 is a multi-source surname. One layer is a state-name tradition: surname sources record a Shang-period Bian state whose ruler was called Bianbo, and later Zhou records also mention a great officer named Bianbo; descendants are said to have taken Bian as a surname. A second layer is a courtesy-name tradition from the Song ruling house: Song Ping Gong's son Cheng or Yu Rong had the style name Zi Bian, and descendants used the ancestral style name as their surname.
