谌 has to be handled with both origin and reading caution. One source-backed surname layer traces many Chen/Shen families to Bi Chen, a Spring and Autumn official of Zheng, with descendants using the ancestor name. Another transmitted layer explains 谌 as a fief-name surname around Chengzhou/Luoyang: Da Jie, remembered as a son of Yao, or a Zhou royal branch is said to have been connected with a Chen fief and descendants used the place name. Later records concentrate many historical bearers in Yuzhang and Jiangxi, while modern usage preserves both chén and shèn surname readings.
