is a multi-source surname. The main ancestor-name tradition treats Chi Ren, remembered as a worthy man of the Shang or Yin period, as the honored surname ancestor for many later Chi families. Another line comes from personal or courtesy names: Jiapu records Fan Xu, a disciple of Confucius also known by the style Zi Chi or Fan Chi, and says some descendants used Chi as a surname. A third line is a compound-surname reduction: Northern Wei Xianbei Yuchi families, and some Anchi-related branches, shortened or changed the name to Chi after entering Chinese surname usage. Later Manchu and Mongol adoption layers are also recorded. These branches are kept parallel because the sources present Chi as multi-origin rather than one exclusive descent.
