Script forms

Simplified and traditional 豆

Basic meaning

beans, peas; bean-shaped; Kangxi radical 151

Five element

Earth

Origin

Time: Xia-dynasty tradition, c. 2070-1600 BCE

Place: Dou/郖 ancient crossing near Lingbao, Henan; Chu lineage context; Xianbei Doulu context around northern dynasties; Yunnan minority layer treated separately.

Origin note

Dou/豆 is not reduced to the vessel or bean meaning. The strongest source-backed layers are a place-name layer from Dou/郖 near Lingbao, a Chu Dou clan note preserved in Lu Shi, and a changed-surname layer from Xianbei Doulu families. A later family-source layer links Dou to Tai Dou, teacher of Zaofu, as an ancestor-name surname. These layers are kept separate, and the page does not claim a classic Baijiaxing line.
