Origin note

Fei is a layered surname, and older sources also preserve a reading distinction between modern fi and older b readings for some Lu-state lines. One ancient line is linked to the Ying surname: Boyi and his descendant Da Fei are connected with the Fei name, and some descendants are said to have used the ancestor name as a surname; Fei Chang, remembered for leaving Xia for Shang, is often placed in this broad layer. A second line is Si-surname and tied to a Xia-period Fei state or Fei lineage, using the state name as surname. A third major line comes from Lu: Spring and Autumn Lu had Fei, including traditions around Fei and the Ji-surname Jisun/ line at Fei/ in present Shandong; later descendants used the fief name as a surname, with some references noting that this line was historically read b. 23mofang also points to the long history of Fei people in Shandong, Henan, Sichuan, Jiangxia and elsewhere, and to Northern Wei Xianbei Feilian, Qing Manchu Feijia, and other adoption layers.
