Origin note

is a layered old surname. One central tradition is the Fengfu or Fengqiu line: surname references connect Feng with descendants of the Yan Emperor line who were associated with Fengfu, placed around today's Fengqiu County in Henan, and after the old Fengfu polity disappeared some people used Fengfu or Feng as surnames. A second layer is place-name based, using names such as Fengqiu or Kaifeng as surname sources in later accounts. A third layer is official-title based, from offices such as Fengren or Fengmi. Another historically important layer is ethnic and official surname change: Northern Wei Xianbei families of the Ben surname in Dai commandery are recorded as changing to Feng, and later sources also mention Xiongnu, Lushui Hu, and southwest groups with Feng branches. The page keeps these as separate source layers rather than forcing one origin.
