Feng is read feng as a surname. Its concrete surname layers should be kept separate from the ordinary character meaning of abundance. One layer is place-based: 23mofang says present-day Feng County in Jiangsu was once called Fengyi, so some Feng lines may have taken an old settlement name as the surname. Another layer is water-name based, from the Feng River southeast of present-day Huyi district in Xian, Shaanxi. A personal-name tradition also exists: surname summaries connect Feng with Zi Feng, a son of Zheng Mu Gong in the Spring and Autumn period, whose descendants used Feng as a lineage name. 23mofang further notes changed-surname branches and gives Southern Qi Yu Dao Feng Yongzhi as early evidence that Feng was already in use by the medieval period.
