Feng is a rare surname with several distinct layers. The clearest classical surname-source layer is official-title based: sources cite the Gaoxin or Di Ku period, where Fengniaoshi was a lizheng or calendar officer, and descendants used Feng from that office. A more remote layer treats Feng as a clan or totem name connected with bird or phoenix symbolism; because that belongs to myth-history, this page records it only as a tradition. A later historical changed-surname layer comes from Tang-period Nanzhao: descendants associated with Geluofeng or earlier Feng/ lines are said to have used . Additional branches are recorded among Hui families and southwest minority or chieftain lines, and some modern cases may be transliteration.
