Origin note

Fu is read fu as a surname. The main Chinese surname-book layer honors Fu Chen, the Spring and Autumn minister of King Xiang of Zhou, whose descendants are said to have used Fu as a surname from his name or fief. A second layer is compound-surname simplification: Lu had the compound surname Fufu, represented by figures such as Fufu Huai and Fufu Zhongsheng, and some Fufu descendants shortened the name to Fu. Modern Fu also has a large Manchu and Mongol layer. 23mofang's sample is concentrated in Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia and Beijing and says more than half of tested Fu users are Manchu or Mongol, which fits later changes from Fucha, Fuyi, Bayan and related surnames into the single-character Han surname Fu. A separate Zhejiang-Shanghai cluster may connect to place-name traditions such as Fuchun. The page therefore treats Fu as a layered surname, not as a literal 'wealth' meaning turned into a family name.
