Origin note

Ge is treated as a surname with several historically transmitted routes into the same written form. The strongest surname-origin layer is the ancient state or place name: sources connect Ge with a Ge state between Song and Zheng, and 23mofang also notes oracle-bone Gefang as an early name layer. Later surname traditions attach that Ge place to the Xia-restoration cycle, either through descendants of Han Zhuo's son who was enfeoffed at Ge, or through Yu-line descendants placed at Ge after Shaokang's restoration. A separate occupational layer says makers of the ge weapon may have used the craft name, while Hao86 and 23mofang also preserve later Manchu and Mongol changed-surname lines. This page therefore does not claim every Ge family descends from one ancient state; it records state-name, craft/office, and multiethnic surname-change layers side by side.
