巩 is presented as a layered surname centered on the Gong place name in today's Henan. One account says Zhou royal kinsman Jian Gong was enfeoffed at Gong near today's Gongyi and his descendants used the fief name as a surname. Another account treats Gong as a small Ji-surname state or Zhou-domain settlement later connected with Jin minister Gong Shuo, whose descendants also became Gong. 23mofang also notes the older Quegong state and Gongyi/Gong settlement layer. Separate ethnic-adoption layers include ancient Qiang groups such as Gongtang Qiang and Gonglian names, plus Qing-period Manchu or Sibe Konggur clans adopting Gong as a Han surname.
