The main old layer links it to Goumang, also written Jumang, the wood official associated with Shaohao’s son Chong; descendants are said to have used the office-name element as a surname. Other source-backed layers derive Gou from Juyi or other place names, from Ba-Di / Di people in the southwest, or from later graph changes caused by the Southern Song taboo on Zhao Gou.
