Origin note
Hua is read hua as a surname. Its main source-backed layer is not simply the flower meaning. The strongest line derives it from the older Hua/ surname: 23mofang connects the background to the Song state Zi-surname Hua line and says the distinct Hua/ surname is first recorded in He Chengtian's Southern Dynasties Song Xingyuan, giving it about 1500 years of surname history. Surname summaries explain this through the older graph relationship: before became the usual graph for the flower word, and overlapped in writing or sound, and some Hua/ branches became Hua/. Other traditions derive some Hua/ families from He/ or from non-Han and Muslim lineages, including Jin-period Fan Yongji changing to Hua and Hui families in Jiangsu-Zhejiang. This page therefore treats Hua/ as a surname formed through graph/sound separation from Hua/ plus later changed-surname branches, not as a direct plant-name invention. Literary figures such as Hua Mulan are not used as origin proof.
