is a layered surname. One well-attested traditional line is posthumous-name based: Zhou Hui Wang, a Ji-surname Eastern Zhou ruler, had descendants who used his posthumous title Hui as a surname. A second line is place-name based: 23mofang notes possible origins from places such as Huishan in Jiangsu, Huizhou in Guangdong, and Huishui in Guizhou. A third layer comes from names using Hui: ancient rulers' posthumous titles and Buddhist or clerical dharma names often used the character Hui, and some surname lines may be related to such naming practices. Later layers include minority surname changes and the historically visible Fufeng Hui clan recorded in the excavated Tang-period clan-gazetteer fragment P.3421. These are kept as parallel source layers rather than a single founder claim.
