Jie is a rare surname whose source-backed main line is tied to a place name in Lingnan. Ancient Jieyang was named for its position south of Jie Ridge, and 23mofang treats the surname as connected with that place-name layer. The key historical figure is Shi Ding, a Southern Yue official serving as Jieyang magistrate; during Emperor Wu of Han's southern campaigns he submitted to Han, was honored as Jieyang Ding and later An Dao Hou, and later surname accounts say his descendants used Jieyang as a surname before shortening it to the single-character Jie. Zupulu preserves related local traditions from Jieyang county records, Cihai/Ciyuan notes, and later Jiangxi literary families such as Jie Xisi.
