Origin note

is a layered surname. One source-backed line is place-name based: Spring-and-Autumn states including Zheng, Wei, and Song had places called Kuang, and later residents or officials connected with those places used Kuang as a surname. A more specific place-office tradition names Juxu, a retainer of a Lu official, who served as magistrate of Kuangyi; descendants are said to have used the office place as their surname. A second line is official-title based: Zhou had an office called Kuangren, responsible for announcing rules and correcting state affairs, and some descendants may have used the office name. A third line is mountain-name based, from places called Kuangshan; Lushan was also called Kuanglu in older accounts. Later layers include minority changed-surname branches and southern Kang-Kuang interwoven lineages, which 23mofang treats cautiously as a later surname-evolution possibility.
