Origin note
Kuang is read kuang as a surname, with Kwong common in Cantonese romanization. The oldest repeated written tradition links the surname to an ancient Kuang state: Lu Shi is cited for the claim that descendants of that state used Kuang, and later surname dictionaries connect the name with Kuang/Guang readings, Lujiang, Linhuai, and Guangdong. This layer must be treated cautiously because 23mofang notes that the state's location is unclear and that the state is not found in standard histories. Modern evidence is more concrete: 23mofang places most sampled Kuang users in Guangdong and Hunan, and records Ming figures from Yizhang and Linwu in Hunan, Nanhai/Foshan and Gaoyao in Guangdong, and Renqiu in Hebei with Guangdong ancestry. A separate family-line layer says Guangzhou-area Kuang lineages often remember a Song-period Sanqi Gong who moved through Nanxiong and settled in Nanhai.
