Origin note

栾 is mainly explained through two early aristocratic layers. The older and most repeated account is Ji-surname: Tang Shuyu's descendants ruled Jin, and Bin, a grandson of Jin Jing Hou, received the Luan fief near today's Zhaoxian or Luancheng area in Hebei; his descendants used the fief name as their surname and became one of the early Jin noble lineages. A second account is Jiang-surname: Qi Hui Gong's son Jian had the courtesy name Zi Luan, and descendants of that branch used 栾 from the ancestor's name. Some surname summaries also mention later lines connected with Jin minister Luan Shu, but this page keeps the major fief-name and courtesy-name explanations separate.
