Man is read man as a surname. The best-supported main line is the Gui-surname Chen-state layer: after King Wu of Zhou overthrew Shang, he enfeoffed Shun's descendant Gui Man at Chen, around today's Huaiyang, Henan; Gui Man is remembered as Hu Gong Man, founder of Chen, and later collateral descendants used Man as a surname. 23mofang separately gives a Kui-surname layer from the Red Di world, where small states such as Lu, Luo, Quan, Yu, and Man are said to have existed; descendants of the Man state formed another Man-surname line. Later and parallel branches include Hui families taking Man from the given name Mansur, Manchu families such as Mancha or Niman changing to Man after the Qing, Hu-family descendants commemorating Hu Gong Man, and Man written in place of Man with a less favored graph.
