Origin note
Meng is a multi-origin surname whose source-backed layers should be kept separate. One early line is the Feng-surname Zhuanyu/Dongmeng tradition: descendants of Fuxi were enfeoffed at Zhuanyu, a Lu near present Feixian in Shandong, and the Dongmeng zhu was associated with sacrifice to Mengshan; families living around Mengshan later used the mountain name Meng as a surname. A second line is tied to the Ji surname and the Gaoyang/Zhuanxu tradition: descendants were enfeoffed at Mengshuang near present northeast Shangqiu, remembered as the area connected with Zhuang Zhou, and later used the name. A third line is Mi-surname and Chu-state: a Chu dafu held a fief at Meng near present Jingmen in Hubei, and descendants used the fief name. Later layers include Nanzhao Meng families entering the central plains, Guizhou Duyun tusi use, and Meng surnames among Zhuang, Maonan, Mongol, Manchu, Bouyei, Yi, and Yao communities.
