Origin note
缪 is mainly presented as a posthumous-title surname. The strongest cross-checked layer follows the Qin ruling house: Ying Renhao, better known as Qin Mu Gong or Qin Miao Gong, expanded Qin power in the Spring and Autumn period, and descendants are said to have taken the posthumous title 缪/穆 as a surname. Because 缪 has multiple readings and was historically used with 穆, surname sources note that the surname is now read miào while the older title is often read mù. A separate branch tradition, especially in some summaries and local genealogical notes, connects 缪 with Lu Mu Gong; this page keeps that as a variant lineage account rather than merging it with the Qin line. Lanling is preserved as an important later commandery association.
