Mu is read mu as a surname. One traditional Han line is an ancestor-name account: Shun's ancestor is named Mu, also called Yu Mu, and later descendants are said to have used Mu or the related graph Mu as a surname. This is a surname tradition and should not be stretched into a fully documented continuous genealogy. The stronger historical ethnic layer comes from Xianbei Murong. 23mofang traces Murong to the Xianbei tribal name; Han Huan-di-era Xianbei leader Tanshihuai divided Xianbei into sections, and the central leader Kezuique lived at Murongsi, giving rise to the Murong group. Murong descendants later simplified the compound surname to Mu, Mu, or Rong. Zupulu adds later clan traditions around Murong Hui and Tuyuhun branches, including Gansu and Qinghai-related lines.
