木
木 is read as mù.
mù
Simplified and traditional 木
tree; wood, lumber; wooden
Wood
Time: Spring and Autumn tradition, 770-476 BCE
Place: Song-state Kong Jinfu / Zimu context; Duanmu / Wei-Lu scholarly lineage context; later Lijiang Naxi and other ethnic contexts treated separately.
Origin note
Mu/木 is kept as a multi-layer surname, not the wood element alone. The Han Chinese layers include Kong Jinfu / Zimu descendants taking the ancestor style-name element Mu, and Duanmu descendants shortening or changing the compound surname to Mu. Later sources add Baekje, Mongol Muhuali descendants, Naxi Mu chieftain history, and other ethnic surname layers. The page records these as separate traditions and does not claim a Song Baijiaxing line.
