Na is read na in this working table, with branches that may be read na or nuo depending on the source community. The main Han historical layer is a place-name line: after Chu Wuwang destroyed the Quan state, people of Quan were moved to Na, near today's Nakou southeast of Jingmen, Hubei; descendants used the new place name as a surname. This makes Na closely related to the Quan-state story but not identical to Quan. A second broad layer is transliteration and sinicization: sources record Na in western-region, Dongyi/Wuhuan, Xianbei, Yunnan tusi, and many later northern and southwestern ethnic contexts. A third important layer is Manchu: Nara/Nala, including Yehe Nara, Ula Nara, Hada Nara, and Hoifa Nara branches, later often adopted Han surnames including Na, Ye, Bai, and Nan.
