Its principal surname-book layer is a fief-name origin from the Jiang/L line: descendants of L Shang, better known as Jiang Taigong or Taigong Wang, are said to have fled to Jin, served as Jin officials, and held a fief at Pu; descendants then used the fief name as the surname. This makes Pu a place/fief-name surname rather than just the character's meaning of river bank or shore. A second important layer is Yuan-period Western Regions and Muslim/Hui surname history: sources record Western Regions people such as descendants of Zhelili and a Dawu Aluwen line in Hangzhou/Jiaxing taking Pu as a fixed Chinese surname, with modern northwestern Hui Pu often connected to that layer.
