Origin note

Pu/濮 is best treated as a place-name surname centered on the Pu River and Puyang region. One repeated layer says a descendant of Wei Kangshu held land around Pu or Puyang, and later descendants used the place name as Puyang/濮阳 and then as the single surname Pu/濮. A second layer connects some bearers with ancient Baipu people, a tribal-name tradition mentioned in accounts of the Eastern Zhou south and southwest. These layers should stay separate from the everyday dictionary explanation of the character as a water or place name.
