Origin note
Qi/亓 should be explained through the older compound surname Qiguan/亓官. The recurring source-backed account says Qiguan was originally an official title connected with the hairpin or coming-of-age ritual office, and descendants used the office name as a compound surname; some later bearers shortened it to the single surname Qi/亓. The graph 亓 is also an old form of 其, so the surname page separates the writing history of the character from the surname-origin story. Kongzi's wife is traditionally called Qiguan shi, which supports the antiquity of the compound name, but this page does not turn her into the sole founder of all single-surname Qi lineages.
