The source-backed main account treats Qiang as a Ji-surname line from the state of Zheng. In the Spring and Autumn period, Zheng Duke Li left Zheng after the failed plot against the powerful minister Ji Zhong; the sources name the Zheng official Qiang Chu in that political episode and say later descendants used Qiang as a surname from the ancestor name. The same surname page also records later non-Han layers: a Di-family Qiang line in the northwest, Jin-period Jurchen Doulie people who adopted Qiang, and early Qing Manchu banner surnames such as Qiangjali or Qiangqili that later became Qiang. The page therefore presents Qiang as a concrete Zheng-state ancestor-name surname with later adoption layers, not as a surname invented from the ordinary adjective "strong".
