Origin note
is read qiu as a surname. The most common source-backed line honors Qiu Mu, a Spring-and-Autumn Song official who died after confronting Song Wan when Song Min Gong was killed; descendants are said to have used Qiu from his name. A second older tradition links the surname with Jiuwu or Jiu-hou, an ancient polity or noble line remembered in Shang-period stories; later accounts explain Qiu as a changed written form from Jiu. A third layer is state or place based: sources mention the Qiu-you state in todays Yu County, Shanxi, the Qiu-chi state and Qiu-chi mountain in the Gansu-Sichuan-Shaanxi border region, and other place names such as Qiu mountain in Zhejiang. A fourth layer is changed-surname based, including the Northern Wei story of Hou Luoqi, originally surnamed Hou and later adopted or changed into Qiu, plus Manchu and Hui branches.
