Origin

Time: Shang-period Qu/Qufu reference layer, ancient Qushang place-name tradition, and later Ming regional distribution layer; Shang tradition, c. 1600-1046 BCE

Place: Qushang old city east of today's Shuangliu, Sichuan; later Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Zhejiang, Hunan, Shanghai, and Sichuan branches

Origin note

瞿 is presented mainly as an old state or place-name surname. The strongest source-backed layer places ancient Qu at Qushang in Yi region, with the old site around today's eastern Shuangliu in Sichuan; families connected with that place or state used Qu as a surname. 23mofang and surname references also note the Shang bronze name Qufu ding, which supports the idea that a Qu name was already present in the Shang period. Other accounts are kept separate: some summaries treat Qufu as a Shang official who was enfeoffed at Qushang and whose descendants used the ancestor or fief name; some later notes connect Qu with Shang king Wu Yi's personal name. The page does not merge these into a single founder claim.
