One layer is state or polity based: sources describe a Rong state or Rongyi small state, sometimes attached to Qi or located near old Chenliu/Jiyang or Cao county traditions, whose descendants used the state name as the surname. A second layer is ethnic or group-name based, including Jiang-Rong and broader Rongdi traditions, where groups associated with the Rong name later used it as a surname. A third layer is occupational: Zhou officials called Rongyou, connected with military equipment or chariot service, could produce an office-title surname.
