Origin note

Sang is read sng as a surname. The strongest source-backed account is layered. One early clan-name line traces Sang to Shaohao, a descendant of Huangdi, who was associated with Qiongsang; later descendants shortened the Qiongsang designation to Sang. A second old clan layer comes from Chengsang, also called Sangshui, connected in surname tradition with Shennong's marriage; descendants of that clan could use Sang. A historically tighter Spring-and-Autumn line comes from Qin: Gongsun Zhi, a minister under Qin Mugong, was styled Zisang, and his descendants used the grandfather's courtesy name, either as Zisang or as the single surname Sang. A later state-name layer comes from the ancient Sang state, also called Sangtian, placed west of today's Lingbao in Henan; after the Sang ruler rebelled and was executed in the Qin Zhaoxiang period, descendants used the state name as a surname. Later adoption layers include Manchu Kuahana and Saki groups changing to Sang, with Yi, Mongol, Tibetan, Naxi, Lisu, Jingpo, and other contexts also recorded.
