Origin note
束 as a surname is read shù, not cì. The core source-backed account says it developed from the older Shu/疏 or 疎 surname. In the transmitted line, an ancient Shu or Qishu state in Shandong gave rise to Shu surnames; Western Han official Shu Guang belonged to that line. During Wang Mang's turmoil, Shu Guang's great-grandson Shu Mengda moved from Donghai Lanling to the Shalushan area near modern Daming in Hebei and changed the written surname by removing part of 疎, producing 束. Later records such as the Jin Shu biography of Shu Xi preserve the family memory. The page keeps this surname story separate from the ordinary meaning bind or restrain.
