Origin note
Shan is a surname with several source-preserved layers, not simply a surname created from the common word mountain. The oldest traditional layer derives it from the Jiang-surname Lieshan lineage associated with Yandi/Shennong, where descendants used Shan from Lieshan. A second layer is occupational: Zhou-period offices such as Shanwu, Shanshi, or Shanyu managed mountain forests, and descendants could take Shan from the office title. A third layer comes from ancestor names, especially the Chu figure Shushan Ran, whose descendants used the Shan element. Later historical layers include the Northern Wei change from the Xianbei compound surname Tunan to Shan, and Hui Shan families attested from the Yuan-period Kangli background of Shan Seng.
