The core source-backed account says it began as Shi/师: descendants of Liu Kang Gong and related Shi lineages changed the graph to Shuai/帅 in Western Jin to avoid the name taboo of Sima Shi, whom Sima Yan honored as Jin Jingdi. Some later branches restored Shi, while others continued as Shuai.
