Origin note

A major Song surname tradition traces the surname to the state of Song. After the Zhou conquest of Shang, Weizi Qi, a royal relative of the Shang house, was enfeoffed at Song to continue Shang ancestral sacrifices. The state of Song was centered around today's Shangqiu in Henan Province. Later descendants and state people used the state name Song as a surname.
