Origin note
Song is a rare surname whose evidence should be read in layers. 23mofang preserves an old regional-lineage tradition, saying early Song families were mainly around Yishui in Shandong and linking them to Boyi-descendant traditions. A separate and famous surname story connects Song to Qin Shi Huang's Mount Tai sacrifice: after sheltering under pines during rain, he is said to have titled the trees Wudafu, and later local or attendant families used Song from that episode. That account is best treated as a traditional bestowal legend, not as proof of one ancestor for all Song families. Later references add Gong-to-Song simplification and Qing Manchu surnames such as Songgala or Bugusi using Song as a Han surname.
