Su/宿 is best explained as an old state-name surname, not as the everyday word for lodging overnight. The main source-backed layer says descendants of Fuxi, of the ancient Feng surname, were enfeoffed at Su in the Dongping / Wuyan area, and later descendants used the state name as a surname.
