Origin

Place: Su state near Wuyan / Dongping, Shandong; Dongping and Henan commandery traditions; Northern Wei Xianbei Suliujin changed-surname context; Qing Manchu Sumuru changed-surname layer

Origin note

Su/宿 is best explained as an old state-name surname, not as the everyday word for lodging overnight. The main source-backed layer says descendants of Fuxi, of the ancient Feng surname, were enfeoffed at Su in the Dongping / Wuyan area, and later descendants used the state name as a surname. Separate later layers include Northern Wei Xianbei Suliujin changed to Su and Qing Manchu Sumuru branches adopting Su. The page keeps those adoption layers distinct from the older Su-state account.
