Origin note
隋 is a layered surname closely tied to the older 随 surname. One main account starts with the Spring and Autumn state of Sui or 隋, a Ji-surname marquisate near today's Suizhou, Hubei; after the state was destroyed, some descendants used the state name as a surname. A second account links the surname with Jin minister Shi Hui, also called Sui Hui or Fan Hui, whose fief at Sui near today's Jiexiu, Shanxi produced a fief-name branch. Later, when Yang Jian founded the Sui dynasty after first being enfeoffed at Sui, many 随 lines are said to have written the surname as 隋, while records such as the Eastern Han figure Sui Yu show that the written form already had older or separate uses. Additional layers include Ming-era southwestern name changes and Manchu or Mongol adoption.
