邰 has several source-backed surname layers. One layer treats 邰, also called You Tai, as a Jiang-surname state of Yandi-descendant tradition and as the maternal country connected with Zhou ancestor Qi/Hou Ji. A second layer follows the Hou Ji/Ji Qi tradition: because he served as an agricultural official under Yao-Shun and was enfeoffed at Tai, collateral descendants are said to have used the fief/place name as a surname. Later surname-history sources also record changed-surname layers, including the Northern Wei Xianbei Dailiji line changed to Tai and later Manchu, Mongol, Miao, and Tujia Tai-surname layers.
