is presented as a changed-form and Liaodong surname with later banner-surname layers. One traditional line starts from the Ren-surname Zhong family: descendants of Yuyang were enfeoffed at Zhong and used Zhong as a surname; by the time of Xia Jie, the grand historian Zhonggu left Xia for Shang because of Jie's misrule, and later accounts say the family changed Zhong to Tong. A second layer is historical and regional: by the late Eastern Jin and Sixteen Kingdoms period, Tong Wan of Liaodong was known for his writing, and 23mofang treats this as the point after which Tong developed rapidly in Liaodong. A third layer belongs to Qing-period banner history: because imperial consorts and empresses were connected with Tong families, some Tong families entered the banners and used Tongjia, with later branches returning to the Han-character surname Tong.
