Origin note
Wen is read wen as a surname. The main surname layer is not the dictionary meaning 'to hear' but a shortened compound surname: sources connect Wen with Wenren, a name used for descendants of the Spring and Autumn Lu figure Shaozheng Mao, who was remembered as a famous man or wenren in Lu. Later Wenren branches simplified the compound surname to single-character Wen. This page treats the Shaozheng Mao story as a transmitted surname tradition and avoids adjudicating later moralized accounts about his conflict with Confucius.
