Origin note
Wu is a fief-name surname with two concrete source-backed layers. One older tradition is linked to the Yun surname: Qiu Yan, the fourth son of Lu Zhong in the Zhuanxu-Wu Hui lineage, was separately enfeoffed at Wu, identified by 23mofang with an area southwest of present Yanshi in Henan; descendants used the place name as their surname. A second, historically more detailed Spring and Autumn layer belongs to Jin: Wu Zang, connected with the Qi clan circle, had an earlier food estate at Wu near present Jiexiu in Shanxi; after the Jin political purge in 514 BCE, the Qi lands were divided into seven counties, one called Wu, and Sima Shi Mimou was appointed as Wu dafu. Later descendants in these lines used Wu as a surname from the estate or office-place name. The page therefore presents Wu as a layered place/fief surname rather than deriving it from the ordinary character alone.
