Origin note

Wu is treated here as a layered surname rather than a single-founder line. One traditional account derives it from the ancient Shaohao bird-office system, where Wuniao or Wuniao-shi was later shortened to Wu. A second layer links Wu to western or northwestern place and polity names such as Wushi near the Liupan/Longxi area, where people could take the state or place name as a surname. 23mofang also records a Yue/Wucheng place-name strand around Huzhou, while Wikipedia, Hao86, and Zupulu preserve non-Han changed-surname layers including Northern Wei Xianbei Wushilan and related forms becoming Wu.
