has two main source-backed traditions. One is an ancestor-name story: in the Yao-era tradition, an elder called Xi Laoweng or Xi Shi sang while playing the ancient ji-rang game and was honored by Yao as a teacher, so later accounts treat Xi Shi as an early surname ancestor. The second line is a changed-surname tradition from : descendants of the Jin official Ji Tan are said to have changed to during the Qin-Han transition to avoid the personal name of Xiang Yu, whose given name was Ji. The page presents both layers and does not derive the surname merely from the everyday meaning of a mat or seat.
