Xian/鲜 is a rare surname and must be kept distinct from the compound surname Xianyu. One core layer derives from Jizi / Xuyu, the Shang royal relative later associated with Chaoxian, whose descendants used the Xian element. Another layer comes from Xianyu families shortened to Xian, including Xianyu state and other Xianyu-line traditions. Later sources add Xianyang, Xianbei and Hui layers.
