Origin

Time: Xuju and Mixu state-name traditions in the Shang-Zhou to Spring and Autumn range, c. 1600-476 BCE

Place: Xuju state between Shouzhang and Dongping, Shandong in source accounts; Mixu state in western Gansu / Lingtai tradition; Wei Xu locality around Huaxian, Henan in Zupulu account.

Origin note

Xu/须 is not just the beard or must meaning. The main source layer is a Feng-surname / Taihao-Fuxi descendant line from Xuju state; after the state was taken by Zhu and later Lu, survivors used Xu or Xuju as surname. Another layer comes from Mixu state, later simplified to Xu, and a place-name layer from a Wei locality called Xu. The page keeps these traditions separate.
