The main source layer is a surname-book tradition about Yang Yan, a musician associated with Shun-era lore, who is said to have expanded the se from eight strings to twenty-five; descendants then used his name as the surname. Because this story belongs to transmitted surname tradition rather than a dated excavated record, the page names it as a tradition. A second layer comes from Qin: Hao86 records a Ying-surname explanation in which descendants of Qin Huiwen Wang son Gongzi Ang used an Ang/Yang graph relationship and formed Yang.
