Yong is recorded as a surname with place-name and state-name origins, not as a direct surname from the ordinary meaning harmony. One early layer in 23mofang derives it from a Ji/ lineage, descendants of Huangdi, who held or lived at Yong in the Shang-Zhou period; that Yong place is commonly placed near Fengxiang in Shaanxi. Another major layer derives it from the Zhou royal Ji/ line: King Wen's son Yongbo was enfeoffed at Yong, with sources locating the old Yong state around modern Qin-yang or Jiaozuo in Henan, and descendants took the state name as their surname. Later surname references also preserve Manchu changed-surname material, such as Giorca branches using Yong among several Han surnames.
